COMMUNITY
PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION
Hawthorne has a very active Parent
Teacher Association (PTA) that supports
the education of each student at our
school. All interested parents and
community members are enthusiastically
invited to join us. Our efforts include
sponsoring educational events, holding
evening activities for the entire
family, funding field trips, and buying
and distributing books to each student
several times a year. The PTA Board
and members meet monthly on a Friday
after school at 12:45 p.m. Dates and
times of all PTA events and meetings
are published in the school newsletter
and posted on the school website calendar.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY COUNCIL
The concept of Shared Governance has been implemented in the Salt Lake City School District since 1973. It was established to enable teachers, staff and community to participate in the decision making process of the school. Shared Governance operates under consensus and is implemented through the School Improvement Council (S.I.C.) and the School Community Council (S.C.C.). All interested parents or community members are invited to sit in on S.C.C. meetings. Contact the school to confirm meeting dates and times.

Community of Caring
Community of Caring is practiced at Hawthorne Elementary School. The values of caring, trust, family, respect and responsibility are central to character education and building a positive and caring school community. Students who are recognized for their efforts to model the Community of Caring values receive High Flyer Awards. Classes that model Community of Caring values can also be recognized as High Flyer Classes. The values of Community of Caring are taught and modeled as behavior appropriate to “Doing it the Hawthorne way.” The entire school benefits from this character education that supports excellence, ethics and engagement among the Hawthorne students, staff and families.
